You are starting up a cafe ...
... but you don't know where to start on your cafe journey.
You are an existing cafe ...
... but you aren't sure if you have addressed everything you need to.
You are an old hand ...
... and despite your experience, you want to ensure all is in order.
Why enrol in the BKH Cafe Kickstart Course?
In our day to day practice, we often receive enquiries from cafe startups usually along the lines of:
I want to start a cafe. I've registered a business name, but I don't know what else I need to do. Can you please help me?
We are also contacted by those cafe owners who didn't reach out for legal assistance early enough, and who find themselves with problems because errors have been made - usually because they had no idea that these issues even existed.
It is these cafe owners who we want to help. Ideally, we want to help as many cafe start-ups as possible, so that they get everything right from the start, and so that they can avoid having to deal with issues down the track.
That's where the startup course, "Cafe Kickstart", comes in.
1
Learn the ins and outs of a successful cafe business.
2
Develop confidence to apply that legal knowledge and put proper systems and documentation in place.
3
Gain the skills and knowledge to stay focused on dealing with front of house, without worrying about back of house.
You’re just a few steps away from taking proactive steps to manage your business. Join today and cancel any time. No questions asked.

By way of quick introduction, my name is Melissa Bush. As a practising lawyer, I’ve assisted a wealth of businesses for almost 30 years, and what I’ve consistently seen is cafe owners coming to me to sort out a legal issue, which when I look into it, could have been avoided in the first place. If only the cafe owner had some core knowledge and understanding of what their legal responsibilities were – then they could have put some structure and documentation in place to avoid the issue arising.
Some examples of this are:
- The cafe whose lease was up for renewal, but the cafe owner did not appreciate the strict timing requirements for exercising the option to renew, and who faced losing the business premises and therefore the cafe.
- The cafe owner who was challenged by a casual staff member as to whether the staff member was in fact a permanent employee and therefore owed employee entitlements.
- The cafe owner who desperately needed to sell the business, but once a buyer was found, the cafe owner could not source the documents required to put together a contract for sale. The buyer got cold feet and walked away from the deal.
In these instances, these issues could potentially have been avoided by the cafe owner having some core knowledge from the start.
A big part of my day to day practice is educating business owners on the core essential laws of business. Knowledge is power. And if they have this core knowledge, then they can take steps from the start to save wasting time, money and energy down the track.
So this is what has driven me to create this new offering.
Oh and I love cappuccinos with lots of froth ... !
